It’s quite amazing what one strobe can actually do. Learned this from Joe McNally in Venice where I had a workshop in June. It’s only one SB900 triggered remotely with an SC29 cord (via infra red). The strobe is gelled with 1/2 CTO.
The strobe is put on the ground on the small plastic holder. Behind myself is the water, lots of water actually which acts a a huge soft box with the rising sun in the East (it’s about 7:30 AM). That explains the frontal soft light (without it it would a be less stronger photo). Shot at 2.8 with a Nikkor 2.8 70-200mm at 2.8. If you have any questions please use the comment box.
Traveling light and working fast under budget and time constraints is a challenge nowadays. One little strobe can make a difference.

wonderful shot!, but let me ask you about one thing:
what difference the flash placed in the third column, behind the dancer was in the picture?
Thank you!

I dunno if I understand the question correctly. The strobe was placed out of frame, so not in the picture. It flashed from the ground up at am angle of +/- 45 degrees.
I see you studied pencil drawing at the same Art School as Joe McNally.
Lovely shot. I think the 1/2 cut CTO makes a big difference.
A very nice shot Hans and perfect light indeed. Will look great as a large print. Very interesting composition and the pink dress is a good contrast with the back ground. I see that you even learned to make small drawings like Joe McNally but with more detail. I think that using small strobes changed a lot in photography in the recent years.
haha i love that you drew it out!!! fantastic. I love the lighting and I would never have thought of using water to create a white box effect. Thank you for posting these tips and “teaching” other photographers how you take your magnificent photographs, they are absolutely breathtaking.
Such beautiful scene. The lighting lifts the model out of the gloom of the background. So carefully planned and executed!
Fantastic photo Hans!
Complete with the McNally napkingram!
I’m in love with this photo and have been staring at it for the last 20 minutes. The ballerina, the setting, the composition…everything gels nicely. The gelled strobe really gives it a nice, warm kick. I also like how you subtly engraved your name on one of the columns.
Nice light, perfect DOF.
Beautyful picture.
